Pioneering commercial winemaking in Bendigo, pharmacist Stuart Anderson established Balgownie Estate in 1969. Brothers Des and Rod Forrester purchased the business in 1999, and since 2016 it has been owned by Chinese interests.
The vineyard sits on a gentle slope of alluvial clay soil overlooking Myers Creek. The Bendigo climate is continental with hot summer days and cold winters. Cool nights during the ripening period are ideal for producing intense fruit with a vital core of acidity. Plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz predominate. Balgownie Estate Bendigo has a sister cellar door in the Yarra Valley at Yarra Glen.
Balgownie Estate Bendigo has a long history of producing red wines, notably their Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon made from the original 1969 vines. More recently, they have expanded into white and sparkling wines.
